WRITING MUSIC

A selection of my music articles now online:

For many years I have contributed to Fortean Times, rightly described as 'the most interesting magazine in the world'.
Here is a selection:

CHIMING IN (pdf 7.7 MB)
Award-winning percussionist Garry Kvidstad talks about harmonics and the mystical power of sound.

JOHN MICHELL - THE LAST WORD (pdf 6.5 MB)
In late 2008 I arranged to interview writer and polymath John Michell for FT. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The interview went ahead, but with both of us aware that the intended celebration of John's life and work would now be an obituary. Other FT writers contributed to what eventually became a 12 page tribute. Sadly, although John knew of this, he died just days before it was printed.

THE MAKING OF ALTERNATIVE 3 (pdf 11.4 MB)
In 1977 ITV transmitted a spoof documentary, claiming that the world's leading scientists were being secretly taken to colonise Mars, since the Earth was doomed due to climate change. There was a storm of protest when the hoax was revealed; director Christopher Miles held his silence until this 2007 interview for FT.

THE STORY OF THE BBC RADIOPHONIC WORKSHOP
In 1988 I worked as a composer in the Radiophonic Workshop. This in-depth Sound On Sound feature from 2008 was written to celebrate the Workshop's 50th anniversary.

GRAHAM WRENCH: THE STORY OF DAPHNE ORAM'S OPTICAL SYNTHESISER
Shortly after co-founding the Radiophonic Workshop in 1958, Daphne Oram left to develop her own 'Oramic' synthesiser. Graham Wrench was the engineer who made her dream a reality. Sound On Sound.

BBC RADIOPHONIC WORKSHOP LIVE AT THE ROUNDHOUSE
My account of a 2009 performance by former members of the Radiophonic Workshop, written for Performing Musician.

PEDAL TO THE METAL: THE HEROES AND HERITAGE OF THE PEDAL STEEL GUITAR
A Performing Musician article that combined my interview with British pedal steel legend BJ Cole with a related piece by Dan Daley.

BILOCATION: BINAURAL RECORDING & 5.1 SURROUND
